Where to sell your art

Journal Entry: Sat Jun 23, 2012, 7:07 AM
:iconangelaleonetti: has started a group :iconmyjunglestudios: which is a place to share information about selling artwork -

Well, I have been selling my art for years on POD sites - POD sites are Print On Demand - which means that as an artist all I have to do is design something up load it and when a customer finds it - either through a web search, Facebook, or directly from my own marketing activities, they place an order and the product is then printed and shipped to the customer - all I have to do is collect a check.  Now depending on which site it is the checks come once a month, quarterly or only when I make a certain amount of money usually over $25.00 (for the purpose of this I am using US dollars - since I am in the US).

DA is a POD site - when someone orders a print of an artists work they print it and send the artist the check.  Depending on how active the artist wants to be in marketing their own work will determine how much money they will make.  Using key words and good descriptions of the art helps place the product in searches and helps people see the art to buy it.  SO RULE #1 - ALWAYS use a GOOD DESCRIPTION  and KEYWORDS  - if you want to sell your art.

but that is another discussion altogether -

SO here is a list of the sites I have been using for the past few years - it does take time to start making money on the sites - the first year I made $6.00 on my first site, but I have now been on there for about 8 years and I get a check each month - which varies depending on the seasons - holidays of course are the best time of year.

so in no particular order of better or worse - because they all have good and bad points -

CafePress used to be the BEST ONE EVER - not so anymore - it can be free, BUT they only pay 10% of the sale to the artist - You can set your own prices if you host your store on a website and redirect to their cafepress store like I do - here is the one store I redirect
FARFROMUSEN [link]    I also have several other stores that I just use Cafepress URL's  - I have not done anywork on these stores for some time - (years) and I get checks each month -
Another downfall of Cafepress - it allows people to right click on the designs and save to their computers - I find my tee shirt designs ALL OVER Facebook with no credits back to my site at all - very frustrating that people love the saying and have no idea they can buy it on a tee shirt

then there is Zazzle - [link] - this one is good - you can set your own prices - it is a little harder in setting up the stores - but it can be done if you are good at CSS it will be easy to do a great store front.the products are wonderful - and varied - you can do skateboards, binders, coffee mugs a lot of cool things - and it is all free!  -
here are my stores on Zazzle - I have a few but here are the two that sell the most -
Pattis Pix  , Farfromuzen,

and then the other one I get regular checks from - greetingcarduniverse here is my store there Serenity Shoppe - now this one the pay varies depending on where the customer comes from - they have several sites they advertise - Big Dates is one of them - and the card commissions can be 15 cents to 60 cents - it goes down if they have coupons or buy a lot at once - I know some artists have sold 100's of the same card to the same customer - my biggest sale I think was 12 or 15 of the same card to one customer - I started with them when it first launched - it was easier to get a card approved for sale since then they have started a review process, they don't take all cards submitted and they will go back through stores and decline cards they once accepted - EVEN IF THEY HAVE SOLD!  which is frustrating - but they now have thousands of artists and I have no idea how many cards -

I go in and add cards a few times a year - and delete once I haven't sold - I rearrange my gallery every so often and I get a check every quarter since I started with them - it's not enough to quit working a regular job - but then I do not do it enough to make that happen - if I actually put the time into all my stores I probably could make a lot more than I do - I do less than the bare minimum and I get more than you would expect as a return -

A few other places to try -

Red Bubble - I just set something up there myself - will let you know how it goes
[link]- awesome tee shirt site - I just never applied myself to this one - I love the quality, the prices are great, and the customer service is fantastic when I need tee shirts I order from them -

For Photography -
I use Zenfolio to host my portfolio and share my pictures - I LOVE IT -
you can check out my website here - I customized the site using their tools - it costs me $100 a year - BUT I can show unlimited client galleries, I can make them private, I can sell from their, set my own prices, I can sell art prints, I can do coupons, packages and a lot more!

I know I didn't get into all the ins and outs - but this is a starting point - maybe the next time I will do in depth on certain topics within a POD.

I contacted Smug Mug and they have changed their payout rules [link]

You have three options: Get paid next month (if you have at least $5 in profits, or $10 in profits for international Pros), get paid when you earn $500 or more, or have us hold your payments until further notice.

This is good because it used to be you couldn't touch your money until you had $100.00.

This is how they figure how much you get

Your profit is calculated as 85% of the difference between the price you set and SmugMug's default print prices. The 15% SmugMug retains includes credit card payment fees, customer service, and the costs of administering the program.

Example: You sell a 5x7 for $10.79 and the SmugMug default price for it is $0.79. The markup is $10.00. You keep $8.50 as profit (85% of $10).

so you sell digital wall paper - how do you give them the download? I have been thinking of selling templates and textures etc... for photographers - not sure about how to set that up exactly - seems harder than the stuff I currently sell

I have a question about Zenfolio if you don't go with the $120.00 account can you make any money selling from their site?

I started with the free trial - and went straight to the $120 account because I wanted to offer a way to order prints - I really want to upgrade to the next level but do not have enough clients for that yet - so I take the orders and send them off to the suppliers myself - I have made the money on the fees - but it doesn't really get you outside business unless you really market to sell prints through web searches yourself - all my customers are my own customers from photo shoots - at least on Zen

They send me their email then I send it through email. I had one buyer I think only bought for the positive feedback. They paid instantly and never did give me their email. I messaged them a few times with know results. They gave me 100% positive feedback I did the same for them and still waited for the email it never did come. I looked at their profile and saw they bought a lot of things for under .30 cents and to me looked like they were buying exchange of positive feedback. That was my strangest buyer other than that I just mail it to them through email. My first 2 sales were on June 9th. But all my digital images get bids and I thought I have a ton of seconds work that is really good but they weren't my favourite from the photo shoot. I always wonder what to do with them. I think I am going to start editing them for Digital Downloads for eBay. I thought if I could list 10 a day ( you can relist what you already listed) Then I could make at least $30.00 a month just on digital downloads. They aren't hard to list once you get it set up because you can use the template of the one you did before. So the only thing I do different each time is the name of the image, the jpg size, and resolution size that I post.

Also if something sells you can then offer it to the other biders who did not win at the price they bid so say you had the winning bid at .55 cents but you had a bid at .26cents and one at .25cents one at .12cents and one at .6 cents and one at .cent I can then turn around and offer it with a click to each of them for their bid price. So for that one download it would have earned me over a $1.00. Sale $1.00 worth a day you have made $30.00 a month. So my goal is to try to get 10 going a day and the auctions can last, 3,5, 7 or 10 days. I am going to start putting mine up for 3 days since the bidding tends to happen at the end of the auction.

I have been playing around with Zazzle and CafePress

I found Zazzle easier at first to work with but then once I figured out what to do with Cafepress I liked that you could upload mass items and then go through and remove mass items. Just seems much faster to do. Although I get lost easy in the manager menu. I am also upset something happend after I had gotten all my images uploaded and set up. I changed the template and when I went to see how it looked on my store my store was gone I can't seem to get the store to come back up all though I can see it there from my side of things. I did go and make a new one and with in 10 minutes I got it up and it looks like this [link]

The one that I can't see anymore took me about 3 hours but I didn't know what I was doing. Although I still think there is so much more to learn.

My Zazzle Site [link] I have found easier to figure out but it does take longer as you have to upload each item you are going to sell. So there isn't the mass image on all the items. But one thing I really like is I can move the image, zoom in or out and make the image fit the piece better! Personally I think the items will be of better quality because I can make sure I like how they are placed on the item. Just takes much longer to do.

I also have my work on Smug Mug [link] This is another place you can set your prices and change things. The problem is I have so many images up there from when I was doing my personal shop and really wasn't selling through the net I have to go through and do some major editing to get this to be customer friendly I think. Oh and another thing about smug mug is I pay $150.00 a year for it and they only pay out once you get $100.00 I have had $79.00 in profit sitting there since 2009 that I can't touch :-(

I recently started adding work to eBay. I have a bunch of baseball cards we found and thought I would post them on ebay and when I was here I realized there were a lot of people selling digital jpg downloads for desktops and digital wall papers. I thought heck I could try that and kinda get my feel for how ebay works. I uploaded two and they sold right away one sold for 26 cents and the other sold for 6 cents. Not a lot but then I sent my image to them via email. I then sold a 4x6 through dA and only received 12 cents which I have to wait to receive until I get a total of $20.00 in sells. After being on here a year and only making .12 cents makes me wonder how long before I will see it. Brings me back to eBay, I made 38 cents in 3 days and received my 38 cents right away. So I have started posting a few more up on eBay. I did come across a problem with eBay though. I had 3 items up for sell and I had bids on all of them just before the bids were to close ebay removed my listing telling me that I had listed them wrong. I listed them just like everyone else so I don't know why thy removed them. They told me I had to list them as something other than art. Out of the 3 I had up they removed 2 and left 1 which was odd. The one they left I made 55 cents off of though. I do have a chance to sell it to the other bidders and that will put me at over a 1.00 if the others would like to buy it at the prices they had bid.

So this is my experience so far at selling work on line.
